Cloud Foundry dramatically simplifies the work necessary to build deployment pipelines for continuous delivery. In this talk we'll look at the benefits of building deployment pipelines with Cloud Foundry, some anti-patterns to watch out for, and how you can practice continuous delivery when making changes to the infrastructure code of Cloud Foundry itself. In this session we will describe how we used Cloud Foundry to serve hundreds of transactions a seconds in prime time TV while continuously delivering improvements to the application and infrastructure code.

Multi-site Architecture for Cloud Foundry (Lightning Talk)

    Michael Behrendt
Senior Technical Staff Member, Cloud & Smarter Infrastructure CTO Office, IBM

To accomplish high degrees of resiliency & scale and minimize latency, it is required to deploy Cloud Foundry across multiple geographically distributed data centers. That implies a number of architectural considerations, such as:

    • How to expose a single point of entry for deploying an application into such a globally distributed environment
    • How to allow the developer to explicitly select a data center for deploying an app
    • How to make it as easy as possible for the developer to expose an app via a single URL, even if it's deployed in more than one data center
    • How to make it possible to bind services residing in any of the data centers to apps potentially running in a different data center
    • How to accomplish the maximum degree of independence of each of the data centers, so that the Cloud Foundry installations in the remaining data centers continue to be available, even if many other data centers go down
    • And many more...

This session is going to discuss architectural considerations for running Cloud Foundry across multiple sites and propose an architecture -- with the objective of soliciting feedback from the broader Cloud Foundry community towards further refinement.

Continuous Deployments with Cloud Foundry, Github and Travis CI (Lightning Talk)

    Julian Fischer
    CEO, Anynines

There is no doubt, continuous integration has improved software quality significantly. By automating test execution after changing code, tests are run immediately and alerts raised in case something has broken.

However, the tool chain is often not fully integrated, yet. In case a build fails, it is still up to the dev team to find and fix the cause of failure.

Leaving this crucial part of the dev chain without automation, a developer could still simply ignore results of the CI process and deploy untested code to a production system.

The logical next step is obvious. Only successfully tested code may be deployed. Automated or even enforced. Continuous deployment is about achieving this goal and fully integrating CI with your deployment process.

In this talk, we will learn how to build a continuos deployment toolchain using any Cloud Foundry instance such as cloudfoundry.com or anynines.com together with Github and Travis CI.

Write your code, push it to Github, wait for Travis CI to successfully run tests and your app will be deployed automagically.

The Journey to Cloud Foundry at ZJU Software Engineering Lab (Lightning Talk)

    Yiqun Ding
Researcher, Industrial Technology Research Institute of Zhejiang University

In this presentation, Yiqun will share how a group of 10+ graduate students started their research of Cloud Foundry in 2011 and what they have achieved so far. For example, they developed the BOSH Cloud Stack CPI. Cloud Stack is one of the most popular commercial Open Source IaaS platforms. With this CPI, BOSH can automatically deploy Cloud Foundry on Cloud Stack. They also designed and implemented a lightweight MOM system (called NATS_Cluster) which is based on the existing NATS (v0.4.28 and 0.5 beta). Compared to the single-node Version of NATS (v0.4.28), NATS_Cluster provides better availability. Compared to Cluster Version NATS (v0.5 beta), their NATS_Cluster provides better scalability which means dynamic expansion of the NATS Server cluster.
